How positive are the press?

Do you feel fed up by all the negative news reporting you hear through the media?

Martyn Lewis (former BBC news presenter), says that constantly covering bad news is lazy journalism and amounts to ignoring the good things that happen around us on a regular basis.

This is not an attempt to discredit or argue against or ignore the value of many of the world’s investigated problems. However, Lewis says “Can the person writing a negative item spend a small amount of time looking into what’s being done to tackle the issues being talked about and include a few lines about solutions to the problems?”

The Positive News newspaper analysed the British press once a week for a period of one month. They found out what percentage of the stories could be regarded as positive (not including celebrity stories and sport). The average across ten newspapers was 16%. Here is their breakdown:

The Independent 22%
The i paper 20%
The Guardian 19%
Daily Express 18%
The Times 17%
The Sun 16%
Daily Mirror 14%
Daily Mail 13%
Daily Star 13%
Daily Telegraph 12%
