These four Saturday mornings are for those who want to explore some of the spiritual principles held within Swedenborg’s teachings. These are summed up as follows:
- There is a Divine Creative Source whose essence is unconditional Love and Wisdom.
- This Divine Source shows itself through humanity as a Universal Spirit.
- The human mind can be perceived symbolically in the world of Nature.
- Outward appearances are often illusory, veiling a deeper spiritual reality.
- We are spiritual as well as physical beings and ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ are two contrary states of life that lie within us.
- The Bible and other sacred scriptures also reflect the Divine Source and the inner ‘heaven and hell’ in symbolic images and language.
- We are the recipients of beneficial angelic influences in our lives.
- Life does not end with the death of the physical body, but continues without end to develop spiritually.
The creation story that we read of in the first few chapters of the book of Genesis holds within it deep esoteric spiritual meaning that relates to each individual’s soul awakening.
Each day of this creation symbolises the next stage of our transformation from being spiritually asleep to becoming more and more spiritually alive.
As part of this exploration we also discover that ancient races expressed and understood spiritual ideas and qualities as symbols. We too can gain insights into the symbolic nature of the Bible stories and relate this to our own experience of spiritual growth.
The pattern and cycle of the seven days of creation, is a universal cycle that relates the cyclic nature of spiritual progression through its ups and downs and journeying from darkness into light.
This opens up the possibility of each of us bringing a heavenly spirit to life in our earthly existence.
Our course book is Our Soul’s Awakening by Thomas King which can be downloaded. But also we will draw on passages directly from Swedenborg’s Secrets of Heaven.

For, like a grain of fire
Smouldering in the heart of every living essence
God plants His undivided power —
Buries His thought too vast for worlds
In seed and root and blade and flower,….
